The Awesome Journey to Everest Base Camp – Day 1

The Journey to Everest Base Camp Day 1 starts with one of the most dangerous flights in the world, the flight from Kathmandu to Lukkla ✈️.

Straight off the plane and into the Himalayas we go, Day 1 is a short hike from Lukkla to Phakding.

If you’re planning a trek to Everest Base Camp, the first day of your journey will likely involve hiking from Lukla to Phakding. This is a relatively easy trek that will give you a chance to get your bearings and acclimatize to the altitude before you head deeper into the mountains.

The hike from Lukla to Phakding covers a distance of approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) and typically takes around 3-4 hours to complete. The trail is well-maintained and relatively easy to navigate, with plenty of signs and markers along the way.

As you set out from Lukla, you’ll immediately notice the stunning natural beauty of the area. The trail winds through lush forests of pine and rhododendron, with snow-capped peaks visible in the distance. You’ll also pass through small Sherpa villages where you can stop for a quick rest or to purchase snacks and supplies.

One of the highlights of the hike from Lukla to Phakding is the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge. This long, narrow bridge spans a deep gorge and provides an exhilarating (but safe) crossing over the raging Dudh Kosi River below. As you cross the bridge, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding mountains.

After crossing the bridge, the trail continues through more forested areas and past small villages. You may also encounter some friendly local wildlife, such as yaks or mountain goats. As you approach Phakding, you’ll catch your first glimpse of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas in the distance.

Phakding is a small but bustling village that serves as a popular stopover for trekkers on their way to Everest Base Camp. There are several lodges and guesthouses where you can spend the night, as well as restaurants and shops where you can stock up on supplies. The village is also home to several ancient Buddhist monasteries and chortens (stupas), which are well worth exploring.

Overall, the hike from Lukla to Phakding is a fantastic way to kick off your Everest Base Camp trek. It’s a relatively easy trek that offers stunning scenery, interesting cultural encounters, and plenty of opportunities for rest and acclimatization. Whether you’re an experienced trekker or a novice adventurer, this hike is sure to be an unforgettable experience.
